You’re Allowed to Change the Plan

You’re Allowed to Change the Plan

The Dufme Journal · Tuesday, October 6, 2026

Sometimes we make a plan with the best information we have at the time.

We decide where we’re going. We decide how we’re going to get there. We put dates on things, create expectations, and picture exactly what the next chapter is supposed to look like.

And then life gives us some new information.

Something changes.

Maybe the opportunity that looked right doesn’t feel right anymore. Maybe something you thought you wanted turns out not to fit the person you have become. Maybe the road you chose simply isn’t taking you where you thought it would.

That doesn’t automatically mean you made a bad decision.

It may simply mean you know more now than you knew then.

There is a difference between giving up on yourself and changing the way you are going to get where you want to go.

I’ve learned that I don’t have to remain loyal to a plan simply because I made it.

I can look at what is happening in my life right now and ask myself:

Does this still work for me?

That question matters.

Because sometimes we spend so much energy trying to prove that the original plan was right that we stop paying attention to what life is showing us.

Experience is supposed to teach us something.

If I learn something new, I’m allowed to use it.

If my circumstances change, I’m allowed to adjust.

If my intuition tells me to look again, I’m allowed to look again.

And if there is another road that makes more sense for the woman I am today, I am allowed to take it.

That isn’t starting over.

That isn’t failure.

That’s wisdom in motion.

The destination may still be the same even when the route changes.

There are things I still want for my life. There are things I am still building. There are promises I have made to myself that I intend to keep.

But I no longer believe every promise requires me to follow the exact plan I originally wrote.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can say is:

“This isn’t working for me anymore, so I’m going to do it differently.”

There is power in that.

There is also freedom in it.

You don’t have to explain every change of direction to everybody watching your journey. They may only see that you changed the plan.

You know why.

You know what you learned.

You know what you felt.

You know what you discovered along the way.

And you are the one who has to live with the result.

So change the plan if you need to.

Keep the lesson.

Keep the experience.

Keep the goal if the goal still belongs to you.

But give yourself permission to choose another road.

Sometimes changing the plan isn’t a detour from your journey.

Sometimes changing the plan is exactly how you find your way.
